How do I request a radiological waste pickup?

You will need a completed Waste Disposal Form for each radioactive material in the containers

Solid Waste

Solid waste is placed in the yellow drums or plexiglass shields with plastic bag liners. These wastes contain less than 1% liquid. Solid waste is typically gloves, plastic pipette tips, and paper towels use for cleaning small spills

Liquid Waste

Liquid wastes are typically washings from glassware. They are poured into the Carboys that Radiological Safety provides to the lab. If your liquid waste is organic (it does not mix with water) or contains other hazards (flammable, acidic, etc.), please include this information in the request or in an email to Radiological Safety

Vials Waste

Vials waste is closed vials containing significant amounts of fluid. Typically, vial waste is produced from discarded Liquid Scintillation Counting samples. If your old vials no longer contain liquid, they can be placed in the solid waste

Please keep all waste types and isotopes separate. The exception is H-3 and C-14 can be combined in solid and vial waste. We do prefer that they be kept separate in liquid form

Instructions

Please read the following instructions and then click the link below to start the process.

  1. Enter the login information (this can be obtained from the PI).
  2. Add a new pick-up history for each container of waste. Example: If you have two drums of solid waste with two different radio-isotopes and one carboy of liquid waste, you will need three pick-up histories. However, if you have two drums that contain the same radio-isotope, you can combine them into one pick-up history.
  3. Add up all the activities of all RSO#s in the container(s) for that pick-up history.
  4. Don’t forget to let us know how many carboys and bags of waste you have in the “Return Requested” section.
  5. Once your request is completed, please allow one week for us to come and pick it up.
